Lucas & Wyllys Solicitors have been established in the Great Yarmouth area for almost 200 years. Our history dates back as far as 1830.

The 1800’s

A solicitor called George Lucas began practising in Great Yarmouth around 1830. As a young man he was in partnership along South Quay with John Fisher. George and John we joined by Thomas Steward, with John Fisher passing away in 1879.

George Lucas took his son Charles into partnership with him in 1880, trading as G & CF Lucas. They acquired our the property at 5 South Quay, Great Yarmouth in 1885. Thereafter, Charles Lucas continued to practice after the death of his father and then in 1902, he set up in partnership with George Harvey Wyllys. Lucas & Wyllys Solicitors was officially born. George Lucas died in 1906.

Moving into the 1900’s

Meanwhile, a firm known as Worship and Rising had practised in Great Yarmouth from 1863 at 3 South Quay. They incorporated with Lucas & Wyllys in 1940. The new partnership included George Wyllys’ son, Nicholas (known as Harvey), who became a solicitor in 1936.

Our present buildings at 11 Queen Street, Great Yarmouth were developed in 1902 and occupied by Burton and Son solicitors. That firm became Burton Moore and Crawshaw in 1938. In 1956 Lucas & Wyllys acquired the firm Burton Moore and Crawshaw and moved into 11 Queen Street, also remaining at 5 South Quay. In 1982, Lucas & Wyllys acquired the neighbouring building at 6 South Quay.

We acquired our Gorleston office at 61/62 Bells Road in the 1970’s.

Present Day

In more recent years, Lucas & Wyllys moved out of 11 Queen Street in 2011, and sold the building in 2018. In 2019, 5 & 6 South Quay was sold and we and moved back into the newly renovated 11 Queen Street. The building was re-opened by local Olympic shot put athlete, Sophie McKinna. We are very happy in our Queen Street home.
