At Lucas & Wyllys we recognise that mental health and wellbeing is important for all employees. By addressing mental health issues, we can improve the general wellbeing of our team. This will reduce absenteeism and presenteeism, lower staff turnover and increase productivity. It will also help promote the employment of those who have experienced mental health problems.
Our team are people with busy lives, commitments, and their own problems to contend with. We want them to speak up if they are struggling. We will listen, non-judgmentally, and offer support. As a result, many team members have spoken up when struggling with mental health issues.
We are delighted that our commitment to mental health and wellbeing has been recognised, as we have recently been shortlisted for the Mental Health & Wellbeing Award at the Modern Law Conveyancing Awards 2023. An exciting achievement!

Mental Health First Aiders
We have four mental health first aiders, trained by MHFA England. We are conscious of the impact on mental health from factors such as stress and we encourage our staff to engage with our first aiders.
Our mental health first aiders promote services and support to our team in the following ways:
- A dedicated wellbeing section in our L&W Hub (intranet). The L&W Hub contains a whole host of information, resources, and links to websites to help our team with their mental health. The L&W Hub also contains information about financial wellbeing, as worries about money can have an impact on mental health.
- Wellbeing information posters are displayed in our offices, including signposting to our mental health first aiders, Mind and The Samaritans.
- Regular emails are sent to staff with useful wellbeing tips and information. Such a tips to manage stress, improve sleep and talk to your GP about mental health.
- Promoting key dates in the mental health awareness calendar. Such as Time to Talk Day, Stress Awareness Month, Mental Health Awareness Week and the MHFA My Whole Self Campaign.
- Hosting events to bring our team together, such as lunches and quizzes, often to mark key dates in the mental health awareness calendar. Most recently the mental health first aiders organised a lunchtime walk to the seafront followed by chips or an ice cream.
Our mental health first aiders receive ongoing support, guidance, and webinars through the MHFA App and monthly newsletters.

Period Positive Workplace
For the past 18 months, we have stocked our toilets with period products for our staff to use. In May this year we switched to TOTM planet friendly period products. We are also proud to support their period dignity scheme. We hope our contribution will help break the taboo around period talk in the workplace and create period positive workplaces for all.

Menopause Workplace Pledge
In July this year, we shared our menopause policy and commitment to the Menopause Workplace Pledge. We committed to making our workplace a supportive and understanding place for employees going through the menopause. 18 of our 21-person team are female, so this is an issue that will or already is affecting our team.
Our menopause policy raises awareness about menopause and increases the understanding of how it can have an impact on those experiencing symptoms in the workplace. Our policy outlines the support available to employees who are experiencing menopausal symptoms and includes practical guidance for supervisors about how to best to support employees.
We promote menopause resources and support through the L&W Hub and regular emails to the team. We will also pay for our employees to attend a 1-2-1 session, should they feel this will benefit them.
This month, most of our team are taking part in a Menopause and Women’s Wellbeing Workshop, delivered by the NHS.
