ATTENTION all parents! We are running a competition to find three lucky families who will be the very first back on the water of the restored Boating Lake, at the Waterways, on Tuesday, August 20th.

In addition to taking to the water in rowing boats and pedalos as part of the Grand Reopening, you and your children will be among the first to visit the restored Island Café and also meet the mayor.

To enter, simply comment on this post with 2/3 of sentences explaining what you like most about the Waterways and/or Boating Lake, and sharing your thoughts on their exciting restoration!

ENTRY CONDITIONS:
The closing date for entries is 11:59pm on Tuesday, August 13th. We have three family passes to give away, each for up to two adults and two children. Three winners will be chosen at random from the entries.

By entering, you are committing to attend the VIP event for the Grand Reopening, along with your children, which will be for the whole morning of Tuesday, August 20th.

By entering, you are confirming you give consent for you and your children to be photographed and filmed for publicity purposes as part of this event.

We are excited to have Ghost Hunt UK come to our offices at the end of the month for a paranormal team building evening! We hope we get to meet the culprit behind the footsteps heard late in the evening coming up the office stairs 👻

Ghost Hunt UK will be investigating the Tolhouse Museum soon. Have a look at what’s on offer…Paranormal Event
The Tolhouse Museum / Gaol
Great Yarmouth
NR30 2SH

Date: Friday 13th September 2019
Event star time: 8pm
Event finish time: 2am

Cost of the event: £45 Per person
(A £15 deposit per person option is available)

www.ghosthuntuk.co.uk/tolhouse-gaol-13-09-19

At first sight, The Tolhouse seems strangely out of place, like a relic of a bygone age stranded amongst the modern streets, houses and offices of Great Yarmouth.
When it was built about 800 years ago, it must have looked a grand place, with its sturdy stone walls, finely carved doorway and arched windows.
Then it was the home of a rich merchant whose livelihood no doubt depended on the nearby quayside.

Before long, however, the house passed into the hands of the Yarmouth town officials. So began its long association with the law, as the courtroom for various different types of courts, the town gaol with the notorious dungeon known as ‘the hold’, and a police station.

The Tolhouse has certainly had a turbulent history.
Over the years it has been home to pirates, robbers and murderers as well as countless common crooks.
It has been attacked by rebels and rioters and gutted by enemy bombs. Since the 1880s, the building has housed a museum.
Today it tells the story of the building and of crime and punishment in Great Yarmouth through the ages.
The Tolhouse would be one of the most likely places to find a ghost according to the museum’s visitor services assistant Les Cole. He said: “The ghost of a lady with her hair in a bun has been seen walking between the Tolhouse and the Library basement.
Matthew Hopkins, the infamous witchfinder general turned up in Yarmouth in 1645.
Most people in the 17th century, even the educated, believed in witchcraft.
Hopkins made a fine living for a year or two finding out witches, torturing them to get a confession and then seeing them tried.
Several Yarmouth women were tried here, found guilty and hanged;
Hopkins bloody reign was short-lived as he died two years later.

The Tolhouse prison finally closed in 1878. It escaped demolition, and was restored as a library and museum. Yarmouth was badly bombed during the second world war, and the Tolhouse was almost destroyed in 1941. After postwar rebuilding, the current displays were remodelled in 2002.
Event Includes:
Ghost hunting vigils in small groups with a Host.

Plus alone time at the end to try stuff on your own.

Experiments including Glass work, table tipping and Ouija Boards for guesting wanting to use 1.

Use of ghost hunting equipment including, K2 Meters, dowsing Rods, crystals, spirit box, Ghost Ark plus more,

Refreshments included such as teas and coffees and our 50p Tuck shop for cans, chocolate ect. See MoreSee Less

🏘 An interesting insight into the local property marketHow is the market?

This is a question that estate agents are asked on a number of occasions every day. Both at work and outside!

I can only talk from an Aldreds point of view and from what we see around our operations in East Norfolk and North East Suffolk.

As a firm we have seen seven months where new sales have been higher than the equivalent month the year before. Over the last 10 month we are around 20% up as a firm on sales agreed. A fantastic performance if I may say so myself!

Why is this? Especially with so many people talking about Brexit and such like. What makes this area and Aldreds but the national trend.

From an Aldreds point of view the credit for this has to go down to our magical staff. When the market toughens is when the best estate agents and staff rise to the top. With our experience and training our staff and offices are second to none. Also we continue to attract fantastic customers to our company who appreciate what we can offer both clients and buyers.

From a general market point of view, in my opinion, there are a number of reasons why we are bucking the national trend. Firstly, this area is attracting a lot of inward investment from buy to let investors who see NR30, NR31, NR32 & NR33 as great places to buy to let given the impressive yields. We also sell a huge amount of holiday type accommodation and with more people holidaying in the UK it is clear to see why this would be an area of growth. We also have a growing offshore energy sector which is creating local employment. Also with easy links to the ‘Fine City’ of Norwich and access to the Broads and wonderful beaches it is clear to see why people would want to settle here.

If you are thinking of selling, buying or renting so not hesitate to get in touch with your local Aldreds office. See MoreSee Less

We’re so proud of our Michelle and her family! What a lovely gesture in memory of her dad JohnThe family of a Great Yarmouth man who received treatment at the James Paget have raised more than £3500 to buy a special piece of equipment to help other patients.
John Taylor passed away in August last year after receiving treatment at the hospital’s Sandra Chapman Centre and Ward 17 over a 10 month period.
His family raised £3,607 in his memory to purchase a device which uses ultrasound to locate veins in the arm, to assist with cannulisation.
Mr Taylor’s wife Margaret, daughter Michelle Trembling and grand-daughter Danielle Cannon visited the centre earlier today to present staff with a cheque.
The money was raised through a fund-raising event and a Just Giving page as well as donations from local businesses and organisations including John Plummer dentists in Great Yarmouth, and St Mary’s Lodge, also of Great Yarmouth.
